Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have been a hot topic of research in the past few years since they can provide different solutions to solve or mitigate traditional transportation problems (i.e., traffic safety, congestion, etc.). ITS comprise a wide range of new systems for the management of transport networks and the availability of services for users, based on three fundamental characteristics: information, communication, and integration. Hence, the use of vehicular efficient and reliable vehicular communications to gather and transmit key information is of utmost importance.
Modern ITS seek to improve traffic safety and sustainability, while additionally introducing a positive impact on people living. Due to the necessity to provide new services that usually involve managing a large amount of data generated by vehicles and drivers, ITS have incorporated different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. These problems have grown in both size and complexity with the emergence of autonomous driving.
Moreover, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are gaining momentum, compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles, due to several factors, including price reduction as well as climate and environmental awareness.
In this talk, I will cover the broad topic of ITS and provide an overview of past and present developments. The emphasis will be put on vehicular networks, autonomous driving, and electric vehicles. Finally, I conclude the talk by presenting my vision about what is expected soon within this field, as well as the research aspects that are still open for both industry and academic communities.
TICEC is the most important conference on Information and Communication Technologies in Ecuador. Every year this event brings together researchers, students and professionals in the field of ICTs to share knowledge, know-how and experiences in the field of design, development and application of ICTs in several fields.
